I have been collaborating for seven years with my best friend Carolyn Curtis. We created this piece for a show in Dumbo called Refuse/Refuse that was curated by the photographer, Marietta Davis. One of the initial inspirations for the piece was an excerpt from the CS Lewis novel “The Silver Chair”. We envisioned a dark, elaborate, and surreal underworld with that narrative in mind.
We started by drawing all of the elements separately, then scanning and collaging them together in Photoshop. Afterwards, we photocopied the digital composition and used transparency pens to transfer the printout to watercolor paper. Lastly, we reworked parts of the composition with ballpoint pens. The result was a more distressed and handmade feel. The completed piece was displayed in a customized and hand painted vintage frame.
A common theme throughout my career has been the integration of hand-made work with digital manipulation.
